ACB's Chizuma rallies press before regional graft talks
Chizuma encouraged journalists from around the region to scrutinize the anti-corruption push as Malawi pursues reforms and accountability.
LILONGWE, Malawi— Investigative journalists training in Malawi's capital met Tuesday with the country's Anti-Corruption Bureau director to learn about an upcoming anti-corruption symposium, writes Tionge Hara.
Martha Chizuma said the two-day event starting Wednesday is part of the bureau's 25th anniversary celebration, with activities that have run since October.
The symposium will bring together President Lazarus Chakwera, Chizuma and representatives from 10 southern African countries.
“We want this to bear fruits and not just another talk show,” Chizuma told the visiting journalists.
Other celebrations have included a freedom march, debates, football matches and panel discussions under the theme “Rethinking Anti-corrupt Approaches."
The anniversary events highlighting Malawi's fight against entrenched graft will culminate on December 9 after the symposium.
Chizuma encouraged journalists from around the region to scrutinize the anti-corruption push as Malawi pursues reforms and accountability.
"Corruption fights back and usually it is those without voices that suffer most,” she warned.
“We count on you to continue exposing wrongs.”
