Abida Mia Emphasizes Need for Sustainable Rural Clean Water Supply
LILONGWE, Malawi– The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Mia, highlighted the critical need for sustainable clean water supply systems in rural areas, particularly in regions grappling with water scarcity, writes Judgement Katika.
She made these remarks during the launch of the "Professionalising the Management of Malawi's Rural Water Supply Service" report by Water for People, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving access to clean water.
Minister Mia stressed the importance of collaboration with donor partners to ensure that clean water supply systems in rural areas remain sustainable even during climate-related challenges.
She noted that heavy rains and flooding can pose significant threats, making it essential for stakeholders to work together effectively.
"We could be expecting heavy rains and flooding again, so when we work in collaboration, we can work better," said Mia.
The rapid population growth in Malawi has exacerbated the shortage of clean water, particularly in rural areas.
The Ministry of Water and Sanitation is committed to working alongside donors to address these challenges and combat cholera outbreaks across the country.
Ulemu Chiluzi, the Country Director for Water for People, underscored the significance of not only providing clean water but also establishing a sustainable management body.
This is crucial to ensure that the water supply and infrastructure investments can be self-sustaining in terms of operation and maintenance for an extended period.
"The whole idea is that we are focusing on rural and market centers. In terms of mandate, Blantyre and Lilongwe water boards have responsibilities in peri-urban and urban areas, while other water boards have different mandates," Chiluzi explained.
He added that they are exploring various models to make sure the systems work effectively and efficiently.
This includes extending the system to fall under the jurisdiction of the Blantyre Water Board and other water boards to facilitate coordination.
The goal is to create a sustainable tariff model for operational and maintenance purposes.
Water for People conducted a nationwide study to ensure that people throughout the country have access to clean water supply, contributing to improved public health and well-being.
