15-Year-Old Shines in MACRA's Letter Writing Contest
The annual contest, organized by MACRA in conjunction with the Universal Postal Union, aims to develop critical thinking skills in young people about their vision for the future.
MZUZU, Malawi—A 15-year-old student at Mzuzu Government Secondary School took home the top prize of the 53rd MACRA International Letter Writing Competition, writes Tionge Hara.
The competition's theme, "The World They Hope to Inherit," inspired Gift Kansichi to write a compelling letter that impressed judges and outshined entries from around the globe.
"I want to inspire others to believe in themselves," said Kansichi after receiving his award during an even in Mzuzu on Friday.
In his acceptance speech, the young writer thanked MACRA for the honor and his mentor, Philip Pasula, for the constant encouragement.
Dr. Golden Msilimba, Director of Quality Assurance at the Ministry of Education, noted the all-male podium was a change from last year's all-female winners.
"This year, the boys understood the assignment," Msilimba told reporters, adding that he hopes more girls work hard for next year's competition to promote gender equality.
MACRA board director Alekeni Wodala Menyani celebrated the 30% rise in entries and the exciting prizes meant to inspire Malawi's youth.
Zaithwa Mchombo from El-Shadai Academy and Ulalo Tembo from Mepic Private Primary School claimed second and third place, respectively.
