15-Year-Old Becomes Vice Chancellor for a Day: A Symbol of Empowerment
Plan International Malawi organized these events as part of the commemoration of "International Girl Child Day".
MZIMBA, Malawi — 15-year-old Form Three student at Ekwendeni Day Community Secondary School in Mzimba North, Deborah Mwangosi, took on the role of Vice Chancellor at Mzuzu University as part of "Girl Takeover," an initiative by Plan International Malawi, writes Tionge Hara.
In an interview with AfricaBrief, Deborah expressed her hope that her experience as Vice Chancellor would serve as a source of motivation for more girls in her community, encouraging them to excel in their studies and pursue their dreams.
She aspires to become a medical doctor in the future and urged fellow girls, including dropouts, to return to school.
Professor Wales Singini, the actual Vice Chancellor of Mzuzu University, welcomed this initiative, recognizing its potential to inspire more girls to continue their education.
He echoed Deborah's sentiments about girls working hard and becoming future leaders.
George Milinyu, the project coordinator for Plan International Malawi, explained that the initiative aims to empower young girls, emphasizing that they have the potential to realize their dreams.
He noted that the initiative has been ongoing for some time and is producing positive outcomes.
