127 households affected by floods in Nkhata Bay District
Malawi has been experiencing heavy downpours and flooding in several districts since the current rainy season started, destroying property and crops while displacing thousands of households.
NKHATA BAY, Malawi-The District Disaster Risk Management office in Nkhata Bay has confirmed that 127 households have been affected by floods due to heavy rainfall that started on April 11, writes James Mizere Harawa.
The affected areas include villages under Village Heads Msundu, Ngombo and Chenyentha in Senior Chief Malanda's area as well as those under Village Heads Gulugulu and Thuli in Traditional Authority Fukamalaza in Nkhata Bay District.
"These figures are just for the known affected households but the number may increase as heavy rains continue pouring," said District Disaster Risk Management Officer Rachel Kamanga during an executive committee meeting.
Kamanga has asked well-wishers to support the affected households with items like food and shelter materials.
Meanwhile, Nkhata Bay District Meteorological Officer Amos Chimbwira has advised people in flood-prone areas to relocate as the rains continue in the district.
The Department of Disaster Management Affairs and humanitarian partners are being engaged to provide necessary relief assistance to the flood victims.
