Zambian Officials Praise Malawi's Gender Policies During Council Visit

DOWA, Malawi — Representatives from Zambia's local government association expressed satisfaction with Malawi's approach to gender inclusion during a learning exchange visit to Dowa District Council, writes Rabecca Kaunda Mwafulirwa.
The Local Government Association of Zambia (LGAZ) delegation, visiting their counterpart organisation MALGA, focused on improving service delivery and increasing participation of women and marginalised groups in local governance.
"The Malawians have got serious policies of 40-60% that the government is enforcing that every sector must have an opening door for women leadership," said LGAZ Vice President Kanungwe Chota Kanyanyamina, who also serves as mayor of Kanchibiya District.
"For us, this is a major takeaway. We have got similar policies, but we have noted that Malawi is doing better in terms of implementation," she added.
Kanyanyamina said Zambia has "brilliant ideas" for similar initiatives but struggles with funding their implementation.
