World Relief Launches Skills Training for Refugees, Local Youth
District Youth Officer Cassam Hillier praised the initiative's potential impact on local economic development through skills-based entrepreneurship.
DOWA, Malawi— World Relief Malawi announced a new vocational training initiative targeting 500 youth, including refugees from Dzaleka Camp and local residents in Dowa district, writes Rabecca Kaunda Mwafulirwa.
The four-month program, funded by ENA Switzerland, will allocate 60% of training slots to refugee youth and 40% to Malawians from Traditional Authorities Mkukula and Msakambewa.
"We will send these youths into community colleges where they get trained informally and certified in a competency-based training programme," said Francis Magombo, Director of Programmes for World Relief Malawi.
Graduates will receive startup materials to establish businesses based on their acquired skills, supporting Malawi's development goals outlined in Malawi2063.
District Youth Officer Cassam Hillier praised the initiative's potential impact on local economic development through skills-based entrepreneurship.
The project represents a collaboration between World Relief, government agencies, and the Department of Refugees to identify eligible participants from both refugee and local communities.
World Relief aims to enhance economic opportunities through practical vocational education, addressing youth unemployment while promoting integration between refugee and host communities.
