Songwe immigration officials in mega sensitization campaign

Malawi: The Songwe border immigration team began its sensitization campaign on Monday, October 24, 2022, with visits to several areas along the Songwe River's banks.

This comes after the office held awareness tours in Ngana and the surrounding areas about two weeks ago.

Songwe's Public Relations Officer Yusuf Shaibu told AfricaBrief that the tour's main goal was to appreciate the confines around the Songwe catchment area and interact with the locals by enlightening them on the evils of aiding and abetting illegal migrants and human trafficking

In the interview with Tionge Hara, he goes into greater detail.

The Songwe border team continued its mission by appreciating the Ntakisi area, which is synonymous with smuggling goods into Malawi from neighbouring Tanzania.

The team of officers then proceeded to Mwasulama Village, where they met with the locals.

The act of assisting migrants' entry into the country was heavily emphasised, as it has many negative consequences both locally and nationally.

The team then went to the Mwantende area, where it first met with GVH Mwantende and his councils about the same issues.

The locals were then engaged and made aware of the problem after interacting with the officials.

Officers pleaded with the community to assist them in combating this malpractice because it is not a one-man job.

The team also went as far as Mwantende 2 Village, where the Songwe River meets Lake Malawi, where they interacted with the chief and his officials, who were extremely cooperative and expressed their gratitude for their presence.

The local masses appreciated the officials' efforts in taking the time to visit and educate them on the vice of assisting illegal migrants and assured the officials that they will work together to curb this evil for better societies and a better Malawi as a whole.
