Malawi Catholic Bishop Marks First Year, Reflects on Challenges Ahead
Beyond his role as Vicar General, Mwakhwawa serves as Bishop Chairman for the Catholic Secretariat and Pontifical Mission Societies in Malawi.
LILONGWE, Malawi— Auxiliary Bishop of Lilongwe's Catholic Archdiocese, Right Reverend Vincent Mwakhwawa, marked his first year in office this month, describing it as a period of "inspiration and divine blessing" despite personal losses and growing responsibilities, writes Brenard Mwanza.
Mwakhwawa, appointed by Pope Francis in November 2023 and ordained last January, credits Archbishop George Desmond Tambala for guiding his transition into episcopal leadership.
"They have been quite inspiring, giving me lessons about life and Episcopacy," Mwakhwawa said of his fellow bishops.
He acknowledged mounting pressure to expand church services across the region, noting, "People are looking for new parishes... they want them to be with the priests now and again, so it's not easy."
The bishop's first year was marked by personal tragedy, including the deaths of his mother and close friend Saulos Chilima, Malawi's former vice president.
Despite these setbacks, he maintains his focus on church leadership.
Beyond his role as Vicar General, Mwakhwawa serves as Bishop Chairman for the Catholic Secretariat and Pontifical Mission Societies in Malawi.
He also chairs the National Children's Commission under the Ministry of Gender, combining religious duties with public service.
