KARONGA, Malawi— Karonga United defeated Moyale Barracks FC 4-3 in a penalty shootout Wednesday, advancing to the quarter-finals of the Castel Challenge Cup after a scoreless draw, writes Lusekero Mhango.
The match at Karonga Stadium remained deadlocked through regulation time, with Karonga United creating more scoring opportunities.
Allan Chihana's first-half attempt hit the post, while Moyale's Emmanuel Allan tested goalkeeper MacLean Mwale with two challenging shots.
During the penalty shootout, Karonga United's Elie Kayombo, Blessings Mwalilino, Matthews Zaulombo, and Alfred Chazinga successfully converted their attempts. Lovemore Ngolombe missed the fifth penalty, keeping the match in tension.
Moyale scored two of their first three penalties through Emmanuel Allan and Clifford Chimlambe, with Prince Phiri shooting wide. Khumbo Mhone's fourth penalty kept Moyale competitive until Maneno Nyoni's decisive attempt hit the crossbar.
"It was a deserved win. Even during the 90 minutes, I thought we were the better side," said Karonga United assistant coach Christopher Chinkwita.
Moyale Barracks coach Prichard Mwanza acknowledged the loss, indicating the team will now focus on securing a top-eight finish in the TNM Super League.
