Education Minister Inspects New School Block In Northern Malawi
Parliament Speaker Catherine Gotani Hara, who represents the area, attended the inspection and noted improvements since her 2019 election.
MZIMBA, Malawi— Malawi's Education Minister Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima inspected a newly constructed classroom block at St. Michaels Primary School in Ekwendeni Thursday, emphasizing quality despite economic constraints, writes Tionge Hara.
"These are low-cost blocks, but we want them to be of high quality," Wirima said.
"As a country, we're facing economic instability, so we must make the most of our resources to avoid revisiting the same issues."
The facility was built under the Malawi Education Reforms Programme to address infrastructure shortages at the school, which serves 1,683 students.
Headmaster James Muhagama expressed gratitude while highlighting ongoing challenges.
"We would like to ask for more blocks because this will help the learners and teachers to have enough time to concentrate," Muhagama said.
The school currently operates on a shift system, with third and fourth-grade students attending afternoon classes due to space limitations.
Parliament Speaker Catherine Gotani Hara, who represents the area, attended the inspection and noted improvements since her 2019 election.
"When I became a member of Parliament here, a lot of classrooms had thatched roofs," Hara said.
"I am so happy today to witness these classroom blocks."
Hara requested additional facilities for the school, supporting the headmaster's appeal for expanded infrastructure.
